William Penn

Allentown School District renovated and made an addition to the original William Penn School at Fourth & Allen streets in Allentown, PA. Our firm was hired to develop the program to renovate the abandoned school property.

Facilities were completely renovated into an alternative school accommodating about 350 students in 16 classrooms. The school is set-up to be used for a variety of functions, not just as an alternative school. Features of the project include:

  • Two new science labs
  • Cafeteria/Serving Kitchen
  • Administrative offices
  • Replacement of walls and ceilings
  • New sprinkler system
A new rooftop HVAC unit with ducted VAV system was also installed, and extensive asbestos abatement was completed. The building was brought up to code compliance. All work was performed in a tight urban setting.

The project called for both underpinning and demolition of walls through the existing structure and a relocation of a power line affecting the exterior masonry. Due to hidden existing conditions, the structural work could not be performed as designed. We provided conceptual redesigns for both an alternative underpinning and shoring system that resulted in credit to the owner.
