ArcelorMittal - Steelton Ingot Facility Expansion

The construction of approximately 18,000 sf is an addition to the existing Ingot Facility at the ArcelorMittal Steelton Plant. The new addition is structural steel framed, 99' high to the roof line - equivalent to the height of a 7-story building, with metal roof and wall panels. The structure is supported by 212 concrete-filled steel pipe micropiles under cast-in-place concrete pile caps. A 20" thick reinforced concrete slab-on-grade provides the working surface for the steelmaking operations in the new addition.

The scope of work included:

  • demolition of an adjacent "Hot Pot" building
  • significant earthwork, including structural demolition, to prepare the site for the new addition
  • installation of approximately 250' of sheet piles and construction of a temporary production track which remained active throughout the project to accommodate the new construction
  • relocation of existing overhead and underground utilities
  • construction of a temporary retaining wall to allow for new construction
  • construction of a new employee changing/welfare building
  • furnishing of a repair crane for the new addition
