East Stroudsburg University - Monroe Hall

The University executed a capital project to renovate and convert the one-time all-boys residence to administrative and instructional use for their Speech Pathology and Audiology Program and Speech Communications Program. The project involved adding an addition for an elevator, creating a medium sized lecture hall for 102 students, four classrooms, four conference rooms, 20 private offices, two computer labs and a clinical lab area for patients receiving hearing tests.

As the building was one of the oldest on campus, in order to keep the original architectural design, exterior renovations were limited to new handicapped-accessible ramps and doors at the entrance, cleaning and repointing the brick. An additional parking lot was added along with the demolition of LaRue Hall.

The project received LEED Gold Certification and the criteria included:

  • Sustainable materials and materials with recycled content (steel, concrete, ceramic tile)
  • Alternative transportation plan with bike storage and shower and changing room
  • Waste management plan
  • Building materials were used that do not emit harmful chemicals
  • Nearly 75% of ALL construction waste was diverted from landfills
  • Stormwater management plan and incorporation of native vegetation
  • The slate roof was replaced with synthetic slate and the windows replaced with new insulated units
  • Geothermal heating/cooling system
  • New energy efficient HVAC system requires less energy to operate than standard systems
  • Lighting savings greater than 20% were achieved with energy-efficient fixtures and low-flow water-efficient faucets/toilet fixtures yield a 40% savings per year.
