HOPE Partnership for Education
This former Salvation Army Community Center was vacant for 3 years and houses 5th through 8th grade classrooms. Renovations were made to the existing 28,869-square foot, two story building to become a new Education Center on a tight urban site.
The existing building needed roof replacement and façade restoration along with all new flooring, windows, doors, stair railings, ceilings, and light fixtures. The main HVAC systems were replaced, including compressors and controls. The elevator was repaired and a new stair lift was added. It houses classrooms, a gymnasium, cafeteria, multi-purpose room, an adult education area, teacher's lounge and faculty offices. Additional funds available from the contingency allowed exterior painting to be added to the initial project scope.
Hope is an independent middle school and adult education center serving Eastern North Philadelphia and is endorsed by members of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus and the Sisters of Mercy. They receive over 95% of yearly operating budget support from individual, corporate and foundation gifts. The school provides extended day/year programs for middle school-aged students, support program which follows the students through high school and after they leave, assistance with college applications, etc. and adult education such as GED, literacy, computer and ESL classes. The Outreach program's mission is to break the cycle of poverty.
