Construction of a biomedical research building built for Penn State’s College of Medicine at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. The building is a cast-in-place concrete structure with “waffle slab” floor systems. Exterior walls are architectural precast concrete wall panels and ribbon aluminum windows with elevations of custom vertical aluminum and curtain wall. The facility includes laboratories, offices and classrooms totaling 245,000 square feet in a seven-story structure. Safety played a key factor in the construction of this structure as it tied into the existing hospital in three different places. Blasting for the building’s foundation had to be done in pre-arranged 15- minute windows to eliminate vibrations during delicate research or surgical procedures.
