Marriott Hotel at Reading Terminal Headhouse

Conversion of the former Reading Railroad company headquarters, originally built in 1893, into 210 oversized guestrooms and suites, banquet/meeting rooms, full food service facilities, a concierge lounge and service areas, and lower level retail space. The ornate Liberty Ballroom, with its 35-foot vaulted ceiling, occupies the space of the historic passenger waiting room. The adaptive re-use project totaled approximately 175,000 square feet of space.

Building restoration required extensive rehabilitation of the exterior wall to repair and replicate the original construction for historic preservation purposes. All windows were replaced, street level granite repaired and/or replaced, damaged and deteriorating terra cotta replaced, all masonry joints repointed, and the entire building chemically washed. Interior work included complete demolition of partitions, ceilings, and floor coverings, construction of new hotel rooms and support spaces, and hazardous material abatement of asbestos and lead. All HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and electrical systems are new, stand-alone systems to meet the needs of the hotel expansion.
