The project involved demolition, renovations and an addition to the former Northwestern Academy Secure Residential Unit. The project creates a new 76,900 SF correctional facility housing approximately 280 inmates in low and medium-security settings in four separate wings.
The main entrance wing was renovated to provide offices, an employee locker room and court-ordered visitation room. Three of the former Northwestern Academy wings were renovated to hold 100 inmates in low-security settings for work release programs. The old gymnasium was modified into a kitchen, laundry facility, workshop, mechanical room and storage.
A new two-story addition was built as a medium-security facility to hold 192 inmates. Each inmate's room is a modular precast concrete cell. The addition is divided into three pods with areas for restricted housing.
The 7,200 SF Academy Administration building to the east of the prison was renovated to become a new office for the warden, administrative staff offices, and video visitation cubicles. General site improvements also included new access drives, prisoner exercise courtyards, parking areas and public utilities. The site is 168 acres.
