Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art - DeSoto Amphitheater

The Center provides an active role in education about nature, art and conservation through lectures, field trips, seminars and other special events. The new Amphitheater seats up to 250 people and expands the Center's ability to engage broader audiences by creating new learning and programming opportunities.

Features of the project include:

  • Permanent stepped seating built into the hillside
  • A large stage flanked by wings allowing access to the lower level
  • Custom-designed curtain system
  • Restroom facilities
  • Storage area

The stage is precast concrete plank supported by grout-filled masonry walls. Architectural concrete masonry units and stone veneer provide the exterior walls below the stage. A modular retaining wall system was used to construct the stepped amphitheater seating. Walkways are concrete and brick paving.

Construction was accomplished while the Center remained open during its busy summer season. Effective scheduling and close communication with the Center ensured the safety of patrons, visitors, construction workers and staff.
