The Pennsylvania State University - Old Main Renovations

The Old Main building - completed in 1930 and centrally located on the University Park campus - is one of the most significant buildings on campus and houses the offices of the university president and other officials.

Renovations will provide the Old Main building with both an aesthetic and functional upgrade for its occupants. Major components of the project included:

  • Adding air-conditioning in the main lobby to preserve the iconic Land-Grant Frescoes
  • Replacing the domestic water piping system and steam radiators
  • Renovating the restrooms

Since Old Main is home to the president of the university and other critical offices, the project was constructed with the goal of being invisible and maintaining a "zero presence" approach. The work was phased so there was minimum disturbance to the building occupants and visitors. All work was completed at night, generally between the hours of 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Given the presence of asbestos insulation surrounding the piping, great care had to be taken in order to ensure the health and safety of the building's occupants. Plastic containment, negative air machines and decontamination units were placed in every area where asbestos abatement was taking place.
