Phase I included demolition of an existing 30-year-old parking structure located at a vital entry point to Temple University Hospital's Health Science Center Campus. The Emergency Department entrance is adjacent to the parking structure. A patient pick-up/drop off and turnaround are located between the parking structure and the patient tower.
The existing parking structure has 4 parking levels above grade and 2 parking levels below grade and was in poor structural condition. During demolition, special care was needed due to the proximity of existing buildings and below ground utility infrastructure, including major steam lines and electrical switchgear.
Phase II of the project included construction of the 415 space garage, primary building façade and pedestrian entrance to the hospital. The new garage has a 5,000 SF entrance point to the hospital and tie-in to the existing hospital entrance. Approximately 22,000 SF of the lower level of the garage was built as support space for hospital programs. Structural infrastructure will support additional floors as required to increase number of parking spaces to 600.
