A ten-level, 700,000 square foot structure, built jointly for the University of Pennsylvania and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, adds 2,000 parking spaces for employees of the two institutions. Constructed of precast concrete with perimeter precast spandrel panels. The exterior is clad on two facades with ornamental metal grating. The facility has five 54-foot wide bays, with each bay having one-way drive aisles with angled parking. Two center bays form a scissors ramp. Three traction elevators serve the garage.
The project required extensive budgeting, value analysis, and constructibility review beginning in the earliest conceptual stages. Sequencing of construction activities—such as the coordination and relocation of existing utilities, excavation of 20,000 cubic yards of earth, and delivery of 2,240 pieces of precast—required extensive understanding of the activities surrounding the site. Construction activities were planned so that Civic Center Boulevard and the adjacent Amtrak rail line were not inconvenienced.
