WellSpan Health - York Hospital Emergency Department Expansion

York Hospital decided to renovate its Emergency Department to meet demand in York County. Construction consists of multiple phases enabling the emergency department to maintain operation during construction. Off hour, night and/or weekend work schedules will be implemented to minimize disruptions.

The first phase of the project will include:

  • Construction of a new elevated helipad to straddle West Drive.
  • Expanded ambulance parking and access bridge with snowmelt system
  • Expansion of the ETCU (Emergency Transitional Care Unit) featuring 16 rooms including six for chest pain observation
  • Infill of a courtyard to become a temporary waiting area and new electrical / tele-data room.

In Phase 2 will contain:

  • A new Rapid Treatment Area with 10 new intake/treatment rooms including speciality suites for orthopedic, dental and eyes
  • Accommodations for 8 results-waiting positions
  • X-ray room and lab to streamline patient care
  • Three dedicated pediatric rooms
  • 19 private exam rooms with three resuscitation rooms in a linear-style pod
  • New emergency department entrance vestibule
  • New emergency patient drop-off and canopy
  • A new air handling unit dedicated to the emergency department.

In Phase 3, another linear-style pod will also be created and the temporary waiting area will be converted to a new behavioral health unit adjacent to the main E.D. It will consist of 6 patient positions, two interview rooms and two quiet rooms. A SAFE (sexual assault forensic exam) suite will also be made providing a private room with forensic exam capabilities.
